The QUILT PROJECT: These Are Our Hopes

"These Are Our Hopes Quilt"

Students from more than 30 countries contributed to the quilt project

The panel shown in the photo here was the first panel completed in the “These Are Our Hopes” Quilt Project. The project was begun in early 2008 when teachers in schools around the world agreed to participate in the project. Each square is from a different school. The individual squares were selected by the students and teachers from that school. In addition to the selected squares that represent the various schools there are also hundreds of other pieces of art and writing from students at these schools. These art and writing selections all relate to the theme of “hope.”

We asked students and teachers to use writing and artwork to express their hopes for themselves, their families, communities and the world. It is amazing how similar children’s hopes are regardless of where they live, their race, their religion, economic circumstances, or any of a number of other diverse factors. The art and writing submitted shows that we all have very similar hopes.

The completed squares were mailed to the United States where two talented and immensely generous ladies, Mary Jain Dayger and Darlene Humphrey undertook the task of assembling and sewing the quilts. Each square measures 12 inches by 12 inches. It took almost a year from the beginning of the project until the three 5 foot by 5 foot panels shown here were completed.

This is an ongoing project. There will be more quilt panels created. We are currently investigating the possibility of creating electronic “online” quilts that allow partner schools to work together to create quilts. To learn how your school can submit a quilt square or partner with another school to create a partners quilt please click on the link for The Quilt Project: These Are Our Hopes.

Listed here are some of the schools and individuals that have contributed to the project. Thanks also to the many unnamed people who contributed.
